Welcome to VSMA

Welcome to the home of Volunteer State Model Aviators, AMA Charter Club 3961. We are a growing club with members of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels. Originally formed in Springfield, TN, VSMA now resides in Cedar Hill, about 15 minutes from Springfield and 5 minutes from exit 19 off I-24. We maintain a 500 foot by 100 foot grass runway with one of the largest, most wide open flying fields in Tennessee.

Proposed Changes to the By-Laws

All changes will be voted on in the September club meeting.

Proposed By-Laws Change #1

Recently, club members have discussed the idea of making AMA membership mandatory for all club members, regardless of flying status.

Article 3 of the bylaws currently contains the following clause concerning AMA membership:

A. AMA Membership - Flying members will be required to hold and maintain a license issued by the AMA. All first-time flying members, as well as present flying members seeking membership renewal, must show proof of membership in the AMA. Non-flying and Associate Members do not require AMA membership.
It should be noted that the by-laws do not include Non-flying or Associate Member categories.

In July, Mike Winaught moved that we consider changing article 3A of the by-laws at the September meeting to:
A. AMA Membership - All members will be required to hold and maintain a license issued by the AMA. All first-time flying members, as well as present flying members seeking membership renewal, must show proof of membership in the AMA.
The motion was seconded by Lanny Coggin, Sr. The motion passed unanimously.

Proposed By-Laws Change #2

The bylaws contain a contradictory statement regarding the notification of members regarding changes to the by-laws. Here is the current version of article 10:
A. Amendments may be made to these bylaws at any general meeting of the Club membership, provided the members have been notified, in writing or e-mail, at least thirty (15) days in advance that an amendment is to be considered. Copies of the proposed amendment shall be provided to all members via the Club Website the month before the vote.
At the July meeting, John Rohde moved that we consider changing article 10A of the by-laws at the September meeting to:
A. Amendments may be made to these bylaws at the next regular meeting of the Club membership, provided the members have been notified, in writing or e-mail, that an amendment is to be considered. Copies of the proposed amendment shall be provided to all members via the Club Website the month before the vote.

The motion was seconded by JW Plummer. The motion passed unanimously.

Tim Stone took aerial pictures of the VSMA flying field Friday using his helicopter platform and 10 megapixel camera. Tim professionally shoots aerial photos and video for various commerical projects. A lot of club members have asked about getting better pictures of the field, so a huge thanks to Tim. These pictures will be posted in the Club Info portion of the website so we can show off one of the best flying fields in TN:

Come join us for flying on Monday, Memorial Day. VSMA historically enjoys a strong turnout on Memorial Day. Jeff and Eddie are working on making this year no exception! Monday will be a great day to fly: mid 80 degree weather and sunny, blue skies. Bring your airplanes and the family!

Jim Bush Fly-In Review

The first Jim Bush Fly-in is in the books. Everyone agrees Jim would have loved the event and probably can't believe we named and held the event in his honor.

The fly-in was a huge success! The weather threatened to wash out the event but by the time Saturday arrived, the skies turned clear, sunny, and blue. The wind probably supressed turnout on Saturday, but the wind died down on Sunday and Sunday became an unofficial extension of the fly-in. The pilot fees, raffle tickets, and concessions raised over $1,000 for the club.
